Dear Provider,

In an effort to assist you with your NJSAMS questions, we have released a new feature – a quarterly NJSAMS newsletter! The newsletter will contain questions frequently found in NJSAMS helpdesk tickets, some important announcements, and a featured article we would like to share with you! Dear Provider,

In an effort to improve our customer service, we have released a new online customer service ticketing system. Please use this new system to submit any issues you may experience. You will be assigned a ticket number so you can track the status of problem resolution. The link can be found under the “Help” menu.


NJSAMS supports Internet Explorer 8.x or higher. If your browser is older, you may have trouble accessing web site features properly. You can determine the version of your browser by choosing "Help" at the top of your browser window, then select "About" (your browser).

COVID-19: State Fee for Service Initiative Prior Authorization
The requirement for a prior authorization for payment through a state Fee For Service Initiative has been suspended, for all levels of care, until further notice. This action was taken in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency. Although a PA is not required, providers are required to enter all client admissions into NJSAMS.
COVID-19: Medicaid Prior Authorization
Due to the COVID-19 NJ State of Emergency, please be advised that effective April 1, 2020 until further notice the IME will no longer be issuing Medicaid Prior Authorizations (PA) for SUD services for all levels of care. Providers will continue to enter admissions into NJSAMS, conform to ASAM guidelines and provide services according to federal and state Medicaid guidance. Provider services to Drug Court clients are expected to comply with all drug court approval processes.
COVID-19: MAT Providers

Update Agency Bed Capacity

NJSAMS’s 2020 quarterly webinars will be organized on May 19th, August 18th and November 17th, 2020 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Registration link will be posted 3 weeks prior to these dates.

Changes in NJSAMS Credentials Policy
Per DMHAS policy and guide lines, NJSAMS users who have not logged in within the last 90 days will be disabled automatically in NJSAMS. If any user’s NSJAMS account is disabled due to this rule, must contact NJSAMS administrator within your agency to get new user credentials.

    This notice accompanies a disclosure of information concerning a client in substance use treatment made to you with the consent of such client. This information has been disclosed to you from records protected by Federal confidentiality rules (42 C.F.R. Part 2). The Federal rules prohibit you from making any further disclosure of this information unless further disclosure is expressly permitted by the written consent of the person to whom it pertains or as otherwise permitted by 42 C.F.R. Part 2. A general authorization for the release of medical or other information is NOT sufficient for this purpose. The federal rules restrict any use of information to criminally investigate or prosecute any alcohol or drug abuse client.

    HIPAA Password Compliance

    The HIPAA Privacy Regulations require that appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards are in place to protect the privacy of protected health information. To meet this requirement, New Jersey Substance Abuse Monitoring System(NJSAMS) has implemented a change to the password policy for all accounts used for accessing the NJSAMS web site.

    The following represents the minimum requirements for your NJSAMS password.

    • Password complexity: Must not contain significant portions (three or more contiguous characters) of your User Id, must be at least eight (8) characters in length, must not use control characters and other non-printing characters, and must contain characters from at least three of the following four categories arranged in any order.
      • English uppercase characters (A through Z)
      • English lowercase characters (a through z)
      • Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
      • Non-alphabetic characters: ~!@#$%^*&;?.+_
    • Maximum age: All passwords must be changed at least every sixty (60) days.
    • History: Set at six (6), meaning the password needs to be set six times before it can be reused.
    • Account Lockout Threshold: After five (5) unsuccessful attempts to enter a password, the involved user-ID will be temporarily disabled for five (5) minutes after which the account will be automatically unlocked.
    Guide to Creating A Secure Password
    Passwords must be a minimum of eight (8) characters long and alphanumeric. Passwords should not be based on one's user name, actual name or any dictionary name; i.e., a good password should not contain standard words. The longer your password is the more secure it will be.
